WOLVES CLOSE TO SIGNING IGNACIO
Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly closing in on the signing of Goncalo Ignacio who plays his club football for Portuguese team Sporting Lisbon. Italian media portal reported on Sunday that Wolves are one step away from sealing the transfer for the 20-year-old defender.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are said to spend big on Ignacio. His transfer from Sporting Lisbon to the club is worth £30m.
Ignacio has emerged as one of the hottest prospects in the Portuguese league with his impressive displays for Sporting Lisbon. He was part of the Sporting Lisbon squad that won the league title last season and also reached the last 16 of the Champions League before they were knocked out by reigning Premier League holders Manchester City.
Wolves target Ignacio became a member of the Sporting first-team last term. He worked his way through the youth system at the club before making his first-team debut. The defender made 20 appearances for his Portuguese club on the way to winning the league title.
For this term, Ignacio made more appearances for Sporting Lisbon in what was his second season with the first-team. The Wolverhampton Wanderers target played 28 times in the league as Sporting Lisbon lost their league title to FC Porto. Ignacio and Sporting finished the latest league season in the Portuguese top flight in second place behind FC Porto. In total, he made 45 appearances for his team in all competitions.
A separate report from English publication Daily Mail said Sporting Lisbon are facing financial issues at the moment and they need to sell players to rebuild their team. Ignacio could be one of the players sold though he has a £39m buyout clause. Wolves are hoping to get him for £30m as previously stated. He could be the replacement for Moroccan defender Romain Saiss who will leave Wolves as a free agent this summer after six years at the club.
