WOLVES DEFEAT PRESTON IN CHAMPIONSHIP
Wolves skipper Danny Batth scored his fourth goal of the season as the team sailed to a crucial victory against Preston in the Sky Bet Championship on Sunday.
Batth’s sole effort was enough to separate both sides in the last fixture of the Championship season.
Jordan Graham sent a corner kick in the first minute of the game at Molineux. Batth connected to the effort to score the early goal against Preston North End. It was a terrible blow to North End as they finished the season with just a point in six games. Preston ended as No. 11th on the log while Wolves placed 15th even with their eight home victory.
Batth could have doubled the lead when he sent another header following a ball from Andreas Weimann. The team threatened more. They had two chances which NouhaDicko blew. Harry Burgoyne has to stop efforts from Jordan Hugill and Daryl Horgan as Preston threatened.
Paul Lambert was happy with the result in the final game of the season but he asked that the club work more on maintaining consistency. He spoke of being successful in Europe as a player – playing in two European finals and in the World Cup –, and winning the Champions League with Borussia Dortmund. He argued that he knows what success means and that consistency is important for Wolves going forward. He asked that the club get some more legs in so they could work to “make [the] club the best it can be.”
Preston coach Simon Grayson was obviously not happy with the result but he added that he “was immensely proud of the players.” He said the team was able to put the meagre resources at their disposal to good use to finish above others.
