Alfie Mawson says that manager Lee Johnson has the ability

Barnsley captain Alfie Mawson says that manager Lee Johnson has the ability to turn things around at the club.

The 1-0 defeat against Fleetwood Town saw the club slip into the relegation zone. It has increased anxiety around the club, as they avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth last season. The last win for Barnsley in the league came against Gillingham towards the end of September. They have not only gone through almost a month without a victory, but it is also five losses on the bounce for the team. It has put Johnson’s position in jeopardy.

There have been suggestions that the club are now ready to take action on the manager’s future within the next match against Scunthorpe United. However,Mawson has seen enough with Johnson to suggest that the club will be able to improve their fortunes. Confidence is extremely low within the team and this often results in sacking of the manager. The club need only a couple of points to get them away from the drop zone. The situation may not be desperate, but the form looks extremely bad right now.Mawson says that the players have been unable to put their finger on the reason for these poor results.

“We have all got faith in the gaffer that he will push us on. It’s a sticky patch, it’s trying to keep our heads high. After Tuesday [a 2-0 home defeat to Walsall], I went home and couldn’t sleep for ages.I was going over the game and I was angry with myself. I feel I let myself down, let my standards drops, and I was annoyed. But we are going to get through this, there’s no doubt about that,” said Mawson. The club finished in a mid-table position, but still just 12 points away from the drop zone, last season.
